How often should a septic system be maintained?

EPA says an average household septic system should generally be inspected at least every three years and that household septic tanks are typically pumped every three to five years; actual frequency depends on the system and household use. That general maintenance guidance is not a statement that the system will satisfy a sale, lender, or local requirement.
