What is the two of five year rule for home sale tax exclusion?

To qualify for the IRC §121 capital gains exclusion, you must have owned and used the home as your primary residence for at least two of the five years before the sale date. The two years do not need to be continuous - they just need to total 24 months within the lookback period. If you do not meet the full requirement, you may still qualify for a partial exclusion due to job relocation, health, or unforeseen circumstances.
