Security Deposit (Limit & Return Timing)
New York State law limits residential security deposits (commonly summarized as capped at no more than one month's rent) and sets procedural requirements and timelines for return and itemization after move-out. For covered deposits, General Obligations Law § 7-108 includes a 14-day post-vacate window for itemized statement and return of the remaining deposit and establishes consequences for noncompliance.
